A former standout football player at Hardin-Jefferson High School and star defensive end for the Rice Owls is dead.

Blain Padgett, a 2015 graduate of H-J, did not show up for a workout Friday morning, which worried his coaches.

Padgett was found at his home after apparently dying in his sleep.

There is no official cause of death.

KTRK published the following statement from Rice Owls head coach Mike Bloomgren:

"Our team is devastated by this news. All of my thoughts right now are how best to help Blain's family and his teammates in this very difficult period."
