The CPSC says the latch and lock on Lane and Virginia Maid cedar chests are under recall because the latch automatically locks when the lid is closed. Sold since 1977, the CPSC says 14 children have suffocated to death inside the chests after becoming locked inside between 1977 and 2015.
Twelve million of the chests have been recalled but the CPSC says it is possible millions remain unfixed and pose a danger to children. United Furniture Industries is offering a free replacement latch and lock to consumers who own the chest.
Anyone with the product is urged to immediately remove the latch and lock and contact the company at 1-877-251-5010 for a replacement.
