With very dry conditions and vegetation that is dead from sub-freezing temperatures, local fire departments have been busy battling several grass and brush fires over the last few days. That was the case early Friday afternoon when a small trash fire spread out of control and scorched an approximately half-acre of land.

The Jasper Fire Department responded to the Oddie Powell residence at 654 County Road 102 and arrived to find that the wind was pushing the blaze toward the home, and also a neighboring pasture where two very nervous horses were watching carefully.

Firefighters used a brush truck to douse the blaze and no structures were damaged.

Mr. Powell said that he was just burning a small amount of trash when the breeze suddenly sent the fire out of control.
