Southeast Texans worried about refinery, plant safety if U.S. Chemical Board funds cut

The President's proposed budget cuts could eliminate funding for the U.S. Chemical Safety Board.

Without CSB, accidents and disasters at refineries and chemical plants would no longer be investigated after they occur, unless by OHSA.

"I don't see any short term implications, but I think there would long term implications," says Southeast Texas attorney David Barlow. "You take the oversight away, you take this board away, t may be 5 years, 10 years, 15 years from now you could have some catastrophic problem at one of these refineries, because everyone is left to their own accord."

There is no word when the CSB would be eliminated as no final decision has been made.
