Jefferson County residents may have difficult time qualifying for FEMA buyout
JEFFERSON COUNTY —
If you live in Jefferson County and are hoping for a FEMA buyout after Harvey, don't hold your breath.
For most FEMA buyouts, a home has to be impacted by several flood events to qualify. Even then, the process takes 2-4 years from start to finish. During that time, you must keep flood insurance on your home, even if you aren't living there.
Those odds and that timeline makes buyouts less likely to happen.
Especially since cities have the final say.
Hypothetically, if FEMA approves homes in a city to be bought out, the city could choose not to do so. Since after the property is bought out, it can never be developed and the city must maintain it forever.
