Beaumont woman indicted for intoxication manslaughter in man's death
A 26-year-old Beaumont woman is charged with intoxication manslaughter in the June death of Carlos Delatorre.
Police say Susana Monjaraz Ortiz's blood alcohol content level was three times the legal limit when she drove the 2008 Dodge Nitro northbound on the Eastex service road June 27.
Ortiz lost control of the car and hit a tree on the passenger side, where Delatorre was sitting, according to a probable cause affidavit.
She smelled of an alcoholic beverage; her speech was slurred; and her eyes were bloodshot and glassy, the affidavit says.
Delatorre was found unconscious inside the Dodge Nitro. He was taken in critical condition to CHRISTUS St. Elizabeth Hospital, where he later died.
Ortiz, however, acted so erratic and intoxicated at the scene that Beaumont EMS had to physically force her to go to the hospital for her own injuries, the affidavit says.
