KFDM Angel San Juan investigates: Is there a culture of abuse at Jefferson County Jail?
JEFFERSON COUNTY —
A Beaumont woman is suing the former sheriff of Jefferson County and several of his jailers.
Plaintiff Lisa Hayes was arrested and booked into the Jefferson County Jail in February of 2015.
During her incarceration, Hayes claims she was beaten while handcuffed and chained naked to a jail bed for hours.
Hayes says it's a painful memory but one she's willing to relive to help others.
In this week's KFDM Investigates, Angel San Juan looks into how Hayes' story could lead to changes at the jail.
According to the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office, there are three pending lawsuits filed by inmates concerning the treatment they received at the Jefferson County Jail.
But it's Lisa Hayes' complaint that triggered action by the state.
Her lawyer says more lawsuits are coming that could expose a pattern of abuse.
