Dozens of undocumented immigrants found hiding in trailer during traffic stop
SAN ANTONIO —
Nearly a hundred undocumented immigrants were found inside a tractor trailer during a traffic stop late Tuesday night.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, an 18-wheeler was pulled over for a traffic violation along Highway 77 near Raymondville shortly after 10 p.m.
During the traffic stop, the back of the trailer was opened and 88 undocumented immigrants were found hiding inside. Troopers said some of the people inside then climbed out of a hole in the top of the trailer in an attempt to escape, but all of them were taken into custody.
Two of the immigrants were taken to a hospital for treatment of dehydration.
Agents with U.S. Customs and Border Patrol. the Willacy County Sheriff's Office and Raymondville police officers responded to the scene to assist state troopers.
The driver and a passenger in the cab were taken into custody by law enforcement. DPS officials said the case would likely be turned over to the Department of Homeland Security - Investigations.
No other information was released.
