BPD seeks to build bridges with Hispanic community after passage of Texas SB4

Beaumont police officers are focusing on building bridges with the Hispanic community.

The police department started receiving numerous calls after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 4 on Sunday, May 7, 2017.

The new law bans sanctuary cities within the state of Texas.

Ofc. Cesar Beattie said the department wants to send a message to immigrants in the community.

"So we wanted to make sure that anybody regardless of who you are or where you came from that we will protect you," Ofc. Beattie said. "You live in Beaumont, we work in Beaumont that is our job that you feel protected and that you feel safe."

KFDM/6 News on Fox's Ashley DeVriend spoke with Ofc. Beattie about the department's efforts.
